Nick and I just got back from a five day stay at Beloved Playa Mujeres, an adults only all-inclusive resort in Playa Mujeres, Mexico. When we booked, we really wanted to find a place with fantastic food and drinks, amazing service, and…no children.

We had discovered Beloved through Nick’s realtor, and we knew that Beloved was part of the Excellence Resort chain which had a fantastic reputation, so we decided to give it a whirl.

When we arrived, we quickly realized that the resort is extremely small and quiet. It’s a luxury boutique resort with just over one hundred rooms, and although they do have entertainment, it’s much more limited in comparison to other places we have been to. Nick and I were completely fine with this because we were going for complete relaxation, and not having to wait in line for dinner or save your beach chairs every morning was pretty fantastic.

If you’re going on a trip to party and stay up until the wee hours of the morning, this resort probably isn’t for you. It worked for us, though and we really appreciated the relaxed feel of the resort.

The Service

From the moment we stepped foot on the resort until the moment we left, we were taken care of extremely well. The resort staff are professional, always asking how they can make your stay better and do MORE for you, and everyone is incredibly friendly. There is butler service at the pools and beach which means that you can order food and drinks from your lounger, in case you’re feeling way too lazy to actually eat at one of the beautiful restaurants.

The Food & Drinks

Nick and I stayed at Unico Resort last year for our fifth wedding anniversary and the food there was INCREDIBLE, so I was a bit doubtful that Beloved could top the dining experience we had one year ago. I must say, I was highly impressed. If you’re used to a typical four star Caribbean resort, the food is incomparable (in a great way). They have wonderful chefs working at Beloved who prepare gourmet meals, and it ranges from healthy fresh pressed green juice, to striploin steaks with creamy risotto, to delicious grilled lobster. You also have your traditional Mexican dishes (which were AMAZING), like guac and chips and burritos.

Beloved has four restaurants in total, which is less than some larger resorts. However, we never got bored of the food. The menus were vast and offered something for everyone’s taste buds.

Every morning at 6am (I know…who the heck wakes up at 6am on vacation? Apparently me). Anyway, I would head to the gym first thing, then go straight to the coffee shop on the resort for the most amazing cappuccino. I’d then take my coffee to the beach and listen to the waves hitting the shore while everyone else slept. It was one of my favourite parts of the trip. Maybe it’s because as a mom, quiet time is pretty much non existent and therefore I cherish this solo time so much. Anyway, the coffee shop became one of my favourite places to go to get a quick snack, some delicious ice cream, or a fresh crepe.

The sushi bar was also pretty amazing!

The Gym and Spa

As part of our booking, Nick and I each received a free Hydrotherapy treatment. We have done this before at Unico, so we knew what we were in for this time. For those unfamiliar with Hydrotherapy, it’s the activity of exposing your body to extreme temperatures interchangeably and then finishing the treatment with pure relaxation. Hydrotherapy is supposed to increase immune system function, improve circulation within the body, aid in digestion, assist with lowering stress levels, and helps to detoxify the body.

There is a Spa attendant who guides you through the treatment, and ours started with a hot sauna for five minutes. Once that was complete, they sent us into a freezing cold shower for two minutes. Once that was done, we headed into a eucalyptus scented steam room (this was INTENSE, guys…holy hot)! Once that was done, Nick and I had to rub ice cubes all over each other. This went on and on until the treatment was completed which took about an hour and a half in total. The treatment then ended with a shoulder massage, essential oils and calming music.

The gym at Beloved was amazing! It was extremely clean and it was fully equipped with new fitness equipment and cardio machines. They also offered free gym classes, like yoga and TRX.

The Beach

If you’re a beach person, then you’ll love the beach at Beloved. It’s absolutely beautiful! The sand is white, the water is turquoise blue, and the area is private and completely safe to walk along.

Nick and I loved walking down the beach to the pier each morning. The pier near Beloved is known as the ‘lizard sanctuary’. When the sun comes out, the walkway is filled with large lizards who love sunbathing and hanging out. We couldn’t believe the size of some of them!

The Rooms

Nick and I chose the most basic room, and it was perfect! The basic rooms are nearly 1000 square feet (huge for a hotel room), and they are beautiful! The room aesthetic is similar to the resort itself with tons of neutral colours, a large walk in shower, and a couch with a sitting area. The beds are extremely comfortable and bonus- you have a pillow menu which allows you to choose which pillow will best suit your needs (um…is this real life)?

We also had a jacuzzi tub with indoor and outdoor access. Our mini fridge was always stocked with top shelf drinks, snacks, and champagne.

Now, for the Negatives

The only complaint we have relating to Beloved is the Wifi service. I feel a little embarrassed even stating this as a negative, because who the heck should be using their phone while on vacay in paradise, anyway? We didn’t get Wifi in our hotel room at all which meant no before bed phone use (kind of a blessing, really). The wifi was better in other parts of the resort, but it was still a bit spotty.

Overall, Nick and I had an amazing time at Beloved and we would definitely go back. It’s pricey, but if you’re looking for a resort that offers ultimate luxury and relaxation, this is definitely one to add to your bucket list!

Lots of love,
