When I was little, my family would go out for dinner and I would have to taste the food on each person’s plate because everything on the table looked so delicious. My parents still laugh about it, because it just became ‘a thing that Alex always does’. It was expected and I just couldn’t resist myself. I feel like this is the exact reason why I love charcuterie boards so much. There’s a little bit of everything displayed beautifully and all you want to do is try it all. You know…a little bit of this, a whole lot of that….Who else is with me?!
Well, charcuterie boards are traditionally brought out as a pre-dinner appetizer, containing a variety of meats, cheese, vegetables, crackers, and more. The other day, I began planning a brunch menu for friends who were stopping by for a visit, and I thought… why the heck doesn’t anyone make brunch charcuterie boards? Not only are they super easy to whip together, but it allows your guests to pick and choose what they’d like to eat instead of having a set menu. As well, set menus just seem like so much more work and effort to prepare as opposed to a family style ‘help yourself’ platter.
One way to really elevate your charcuterie board is by tossing in some beautiful flowers for colour, adding a variety of smaller bowls for variation, and serving it on a pretty tray for added appeal. I think the real secret to a beautiful charcuterie board is to fill in the spaces between the different foods, and ensure your board contains a variety of colours, textures, sizes and shapes. You don’t have to be ‘too perfect’ with charcuterie boards; they can look a bit messy, a bit all over the place. That’s what gives them their appeal!
For this brunch charcuterie board, I added my homemade strawberry waffles (recipe below), a variety of berries, croissants, bacon, natural maple syrup, strawberry compote, dark chocolate granola, and Conestoga Farms Free Run Omega-3 Eggs.
We buy these eggs because they are produced by local Ontario farmers and their families. We’ve been making an effort in 2019 to support local as much as possible, and Conestoga Farms Eggs is a great way to do this. I live in Ontario, Canada and Conestoga Farms is a local southwestern Ontario brand, which we love. In addition, we typically buy their Omega-3 Eggs because they contain Omega-3 polyunsaturates which are essential fatty acids required for health. But, Omega-3 polyunsaturates can’t actually be produced by the body – they have to be consumed in your diet (cue, Conestoga Farms Free Run Omega-3 Eggs). The Ontario egg farmers who produce these eggs enrich the hens’ all-grain diet with flax seed as well as lutein, which is an amazing antioxidant! I also added these eggs to my Strawberry Waffle recipe…and guys, I’m pretty confident you’ll want to make these every Sunday morning; they are that good! (*side note: Conestoga Farms also offers Hard Boiled and Peeled Eggs. If you’re trying to save time while putting together your charcuterie board, use these)!
This Strawberry Waffle recipe is extremely easy to make, and they always turn out nice and fluffy. Enjoy!
- 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 2 cups milk
- 2 Conestoga Farms Free Run Omega-3 Eggs
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup strawberries, sliced thinly
- Preheat waffle iron. Spray with oil.
- In a large bowl combine the white flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, brown sugar, and mix well.
- In another bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, and melted butter.
- Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mix until combined. Last, add the strawberries and stir together.
- Pour the batter into your waffle iron and cook until waffles have browned and are crispy on the outside. Serve with fresh strawberries, maple syrup and butter. Enjoy!
